Mindy: Why did you decide to study herbs?

Lori: There are two reasons I decided to study herbs. And while I didn’t go looking for herbs, they found me!

First, my father has a severely degenerative chronic disease; and, quite frankly, doctors didn’t always expect him to live. He did survive, and for many years longer than expected and with a better quality of life. I then became very interested in anything outside the mainstream medical paradigm that could possibly explain why he was he was doing so well.

For the second reason, it started while I was in college. I developed chronic bronchitis and began taking multiple rounds of antibiotics each year. My hay fever and seasonal allergies became uncontrollable by prescription allergy meds and when I began experiencing side effects from the meds, my doctors flat out didn’t believe that I was even experiencing the side effects! I then saw an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist who recommended an MRI and other procedures to try and figure out why I had constant sinus infections, bronchitis and bronchi-pneumonia. This started to sound very serious to me, even at age 20! I began to research on my own (and the internet was in its infancy then) and decided to take matters into my own hands. 1) I took a simple homeopathic remedy, Allium cepa, for my symptoms. 2) I changed my diet to include more green and whole foods. 3) The next time I got sick, I didn’t take any antibiotics. I literally rolled up in about 3 blankets, stayed in bed for two days, sweating and getting the chills like crazy, and didn’t take another antibiotic for over 10 years.

I then told my Ear, Nose and Throat specialist about the benefits I found from the Allium cepa homeopathic remedy, and I kid you not, he said, “Do you want me to wear a bear claw necklace and dance around the campfire too?” Wow. Yep, he said those exact words. I didn’t have the wherewithal at age 21 to say anything in return, but that comment spurred me to keep searching for answers in alternative-style medicine. By the time I was 26, I was enrolled at the Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies, and ended up finishing the 3-year, almost 1400 hour program as a Certified Clinical Herbalist. Our Advanced Classes director, Paul Bergner, firmly believed that you should first treat someone with diet and lifestyle changes, then with an adjunct of herbs. See why I think the herbs found me?

Mindy: Why did you start making your own products?

Lori: Part of the 3rd year of herb school was the clinical internship program. This partly consisted of seeing clients at the student-run Consultation Center, and participating in a weekly roundtable discussion on client case studies. After finishing school I started seeing my own clients in 2003. While I would write up a detailed recommendation sheet for them, including diet, lifestyle and herbal recommendations, their favorite part was almost always the specialized body or medicinal product that I custom created for them! And so combined with my intense interest in essential oils, voila! My product making had begun.

Not long after this, I started my own family. With this new development in my life, I began my quest to get rid of every purchased body product or synthetic medicine my family had in our home, and replace it with all natural, handcrafted, herbal product and medicine made by me!

Mindy: What qualities do you look for in the ingredients that you select to use in your products?

Lori: I look for the highest quality ingredients available that don’t drive the price to inaccessibility for normal people. I think this is very important for my products to be “clean” without having a prohibitive cost! For example: every herb that I incorporate into each and every product is either certified organic or ethically wildcrafted, and almost all of these herbs are from Mountain Rose Herbs and you can read about their unsurpassed quality.

I also look for minimally processed ingredients. Because I am not just a product-maker, putting together purchased extracts and other ingredients, but also an herbalist trained in medicine-making, I create so many of my extracts and base ingredients myself. I use organic when not completely cost-prohibitive, and I do believe there is some “green-washing” going on with the term ‘organic’.

And I do not use synthetic ingredients! This is includes fragrance oils. Fragrance oils can use over 4,000 separate chemicals, which the FDA does not require the manufacturer to list. Many of these chemicals are carcinogenic, toxic and hormone disruptors. I use only pure essential oils, which are steam distilled from actual plant material. Some of the other synthetic ingredients I would never use are parabens, phthalates, sodium laureth sulfate and mineral oil, among others. Yuck! It’s unbelievable to me that companies still put mineral oil, which is petroleum derived and used as an industrial lubricant, into skin care products! Reading labels couldn’t be any more important to check for synthetic ingredients.

Mindy: What benefits can people expect from using your products?

Lori: I’m so glad you asked this question, Mindy! The benefits people can expect from using my products are huge!

Reduce your toxic load, since my products contain only natural ingredients.

Everything toxic that we breathe, (think car exhaust fumes, synthetic perfumes, dryer sheet smell), eat (think foods we have sensitivities to, trans fats and processed foods), and put on our skin (think fragrance oils in lotions from mall stores, make-up filled with chemicals and body care with synthetic ingredients), must be processed and eliminated from our system by our liver. If we overload the liver, it can’t do its job of eliminating toxins. The liver then stores these toxins in adipose tissue (fat) and the nervous system. Some toxins also make their way out through the back-up system organ of elimination – the skin!

Some other benefits people can expect by using my products:

Reduce inflammatory conditions, which in turn help reduce bacterial activity.

Slough off old skin cells which make way for new, healthy skin cells underneath.

The herbs and natural ingredients I use have cell-regenerative properties (this promotes the growth of new healthy cells!), astringent properties (helps firm up loose and sagging skin), emollient properties (soften the skin with nutrients and oils that the skin recognizes as nourishing) and contain antioxidants that fight free radicals (free radicals are the primary causative factor in aging and wrinkle formation!)

And I think I’ve saved the most important benefit for last:

Protect your incredibly valuable skin flora, aka acid mantle, aka skin microbiome.

The acid mantle is the very surface of the skin wherein lies a slightly acidic coating of oil and is home to a rich and diverse terrain of bacteria. These natural oils and beneficial bacteria keep our skin healthy; not dry, stretched and flaky. The natural oils and bacteria, aka skin flora, or more appropriately, the skin microbiome, is also extremely important in protecting our bodies from pathogenic organisms trying to set up residence on our skin, protecting us from outside environmental factors, and keeping non-pathogenic, beneficial bacteria from turning into pathogenic bacteria.

Stripping the skin microbiome with harsh soap, chemical peels and other intense dermatological interventions can have devastating results for the delicate ecology of the skin flora. For one, once the lower layers of skin recognize you’ve stripped the natural oils, your skin gets real busy making more and more oil, which can easily result in an overproduction of oil. Second, stripping the balanced skin flora can allow for overgrowth in pathogenic flora such as gram positive Staphylococcus aureus or Candida albicans.

Pathogenic flora, damaged skin and microorganisms also play a part in skin diseases and can enter the blood system, which can be particularly problematic and of dire consequences in immuno-suppressed people.

Bottom line, skin flora is important in many different ways! Using my l.c. of acirema products in the Oil Cleansing Method does not strip the skin flora. It actually supports and helps balance that very special skin ecology. And yes, you can definitely make your own facial products! So many of my customers have made their own and will from time to time. However, I offer my l.c. of acirema products when 1) making your own does not interest you. 2) You just don’t have time. 3) You find out that purchasing all the base material to make a product just like mine actually costs you more in the end, (I’ve had several friends attest to this). You can easily make a simple formula, but I’ve added many, many layers of healing properties into creating my formulas.

Thank you, Mindy, for allowing me to share! This is just some of the information I teach in my skin care classes, and there is just so much more people can do to heal their skin from the inside out. But following the food information on your blog is the absolute best place to start! And if anyone has any other questions, please feel free to contact me at roopzip10 (at) msn (dot) com. I love to hear from people!

If you’re anything like me, after you’ve made the transition to eating real, unprocessed foods, you start to notice all the other areas in your life where toxins creep in. Suddenly you’re worried about the dish detergent you use, the cleaning products stocked in your cupboards, and the body products you lather on your skin!

When you’re just starting to transition away from conventional products, it can be quite overwhelming to contemplate making everything yourself. I started out by looking for options at my local health food store first. You can find some great options. However, even many of the body care products you find in a health food store may still contain ingredients that you want to avoid.

I’m so glad to share with you a terrific source I found for high-quality handmade body care products that you can order online. I’m sure you’ll enjoy them as much as I have!

l.c. of acirema

I first learned about these products when the owner, Lori Roop, came to one of my GAPS get togethers. It was fun to learn that she makes all sorts of wonderful body care products in her home in Old Town Arvada, Colorado.

Lori is a certified clinical herbalist. She tests all of the products that she creates on her own family. If it doesn’t work well for them, she doesn’t sell it to you!

She is very careful where she sources all of the ingredients that she incorporates and never uses parabens, fragrance, or other synthetic ingredients. Lori uses certified organic or ethically wildcrafted ingredients for her products. She also works hard to find the best prices possible to keep her products affordable.

The Products

Herbal Facial Kit

Lori was kind enough to supply me with a sample of just about every product that she makes and sells. She has quite the collection available!

I thought it would be best to share a few of my favorites with you, and you let you take a look at her Etsy shop to see the rest that she has available.

My favorite by far is her oil facial cleanser, Mug Preference. I had been wanting to give the oil cleansing method a try for quite some time, but it was always really daunting to me to try mixing my own blends. After using Lori’s blend for some time now, I love cleansing my face this way! My skin looks clearer after using this for the past few months. If you’ve been hesitant to try the oil cleansing method, I highly recommend giving it a shot with this product!

My next two favorites are the other two items in her Herbal Skin Care Kit: Queen of Mug Herbal Toner and Eye Pop/Skin Revitalizing Lotion. Both the toner and moisturizer have been a really nice addition to my skin-care routine. Neither is too heavy and they have contributed to my nicer skin as of late!

Dragon Juice

One other favorite product that I want to mention is Lori’s Dragon Juice. She first brought some for me as a gift when she attended my GAPS get together. I try to drink nettle tea for asthma and allergies somewhat frequently, but it’s not my favorite taste. This blend is so delicious! Even your kids will like it – especially because of its red color! This has such a nice flavor that I will even mix extra nettles in with it before steeping. I get extra nettles in a tea that I actually enjoy.

This is the fourth part of my four-part series on exercise: Let’s Move. Be sure to read the rest of the series if you missed it. I stretch every evening before bed to help maintain my flexibility and to help with chronic pain. I’ve loved trying many of the stretches that Robin include in her e-book, Pain Free. A big thanks to Robin Konie for writing the post below!

With the New Year there are plenty of resolutions about eating better and exercising more. Something about a new beginning makes us want to be better. But lest you think you need to train for a marathon, sometimes it ís important to remember that small and simple things can bring about great changes.

This is why I love talking to people about the importance of stretching and daily movement.

Why is stretching important?

Sure, stretching is not a magical quick fix fitness trick that will make you somehow thinner, stronger, or more beautiful. We need to incorporate a variety of movement within our day – making sure to keep a balanced perspective of strength training, cardiovascular training, muscle endurance, body connectivity and flexibility. But stretching, even just a few minutes here and there, can make a big difference in how you feel during your day.

Beyond just improving our range of motion, taking a few minutes throughout the day to focus on some key specific stretches can make a huge difference. Stretching does not demand a huge time commitment, but just look at some of the benefits associated with stretching:

Reduced muscle tension

Increased range of movement in the joints

Enhanced muscular coordination

Increased circulation to various parts of the body

Increased energy levels (resulting from increased circulation)

Delayed onset of muscle fatigue

Enhanced performance in daily life, sports, or other physical activity

Improved posture

Mental relaxation

Added variety, enjoyment, and satisfaction to your exercise program

Improves balance and coordination

Helps alleviate back pain

Helps improve cardiovascular health

Decrease the risk of athletic-based injuries

An impressive list, right? Of course the quality and mindfulness that goes into our stretching habits makes a huge difference between killing time and changing your body.

Make your stretching matter

As with all health-related practices, you want to make sure you are smart about stretching. One of the perks of stretching is that you can do it pretty much anytime and anywhere (and you don’t have to put on any spandex either). There are, however, some essential tips to make sure you are getting the most out of your stretching as well as keeping your body safe:

1. Remember: Stretching is not a warm-up.

Stretching cold muscles can easily lead to injury. Think of your muscles like a rubber band. The elasticity can turn violently breakable if ice cold. A lot of people think stretching is the warm-up before exercising. But to maximize your stretching efforts you may find that some light walking, jogging, or a couple of jumping jacks can prepare your body better. Of course if you are doing some serious stretching (working on those splits?) then you’ll want to break a sweat before diving in.

2. Remember that stretching is a full body experience.

Even if your goal is to improve your back’s flexibility, most stretches combine several major muscles groups (along with lots of little guys as well). Keep your mind focused on what you are doing. Don’t just stretch the parts of your body that are the most flexible. Breathe as you work on all areas (especially your weaknesses), making sure to balance both sides out.

3. Whatever you do, DO NOT bounce!

I’m not sure where the bouncing trend came from or when it started, but I remember plenty of horrific dance days as a child where my teacher would lead us into a bouncy stretch. This can tear the tissues of your muscle, which once healed can make you even tighter. Instead of bouncing, hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds while breathing deeply. This will help ease your body into the stretch while overriding the natural stretch reflex (the body’s way of preventing injury) in a safe way.

4. Listen to your body.

Stretching is not about pain. If you are really inflexible you might feel a slight discomfort as you expand your body’s range of motion, but ultimately the goal is gradual progress. Back off a little if you can’t relax and breathe into the stretch. You will still improve over time. Promise.

5. Be consistent.

Over my many years of teaching dance I’ve listened to a lot of students talk about their flexibility goals. These eager individuals would dive into a stretching program but were soon derailed as busy life got in the way. This is why I often recommend a “little but often” mentality. You don’t need to spend thirty – forty five minutes stretching. But if you are consistent about stretching every day for at least ten minutes you will see improvement.

6. Know when to stop

There are times when even a gentle stretch is too much. If you have a chronic condition or an injury you may need to adjust your normal stretching routine. For example, in the case of an injury (like a sprained ankle), stretching that area of the body is a bad idea. (And of course, always make sure to talk to your own health care professional before beginning any exercise or stretching program.)

Beyond Stretching

I’ve seen stretching help lots of people who are dealing with chronic tension and pain. Consider checking out my free eguide: Move Free to learn some simple stretches that will help you improve your posture and lengthen shortened muscles.

You may also want to check out my ebook Pain Free: 60 exercises for pain-free living. This book goes beyond stretching and discusses the importance of Somatic movement to help reconnect to your body. The right kind of daily movement can help you feel more graceful, be more coordinated, and resolve chronic pain. (And it doesn’t require heavy weights or personal trainers.)

Tell me, what’s your favorite stretch and why?

I loved the idea of blending the movement of the hoop with dance. I think it takes me back to my years as a baton twirler – it’s just so much more natural for me to dance with something in my hands! Sometimes I think we can get so focused on getting enough exercise into our day that we forget to find something fun and joyful to do. It’s even better when that something is very active!

I sat down recently with my hooping instructor, Kristina Sutcliffe, of O Dance and asked her a few questions to help explain hooping to all of you lovely readers.

Mindy: What is Hooping?

Kristina: Hooping is a member of the flow arts and is a fast-growing fitness and meditation practice that blends play, exercise and dance into a fun and healthful activity that moves the body, stills the mind, and uplifts the spirit. The hoop is used as a movement tool or dance partner to help access movement and flow of movement. Hooping combines technical moves or tricks with freestyle or technical dancing and is accompanied by music. One may hoop around all parts of the body, not just the waist.

The flow arts are playful movement arts involving skill toys such as hoops, poi, and staff, to name a few. These tools or toys help evoke the exploration of dynamic, flowing and sequential movements. Flow is a mental state of mind in which a person in an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus and full involvement. In flow one can access a full mind-body connection.

Mindy: When did you start hooping? Why did you start?

Kristina: I found hooping at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival 5 years ago. I made a hoop with my daughter as a fun activity to do with her. Then we went out under the magical blue skies of Colorado, listening to lively fun music and danced our hearts out with the hoops for a number of hours. I was hooked! I loved the rhythmic feeling of the hoop coming across my body and with my new (heavy) hoop I was able to hoop easily. I was unable to before as I always tried with a smaller, lighter hoop. Finding dance within the hoop made me feel joyful, happy and giddy as my daughter and I played and danced together into the evening under the starlit sky.

Being hooked, I had to find out more about this hoop dance thing. I found myself wanting to learn more and more. I took a few classes from one of the hooping world’s best, Shakti Sunfire, not knowing exactly what I was getting into. She moved so easily and gracefully within the hoop. I was entranced and determined to learn more. I found out that I could become certified to teach Hoop Dance from a company in California, Hoopnotica. As soon as I could, I flew out to Santa Monica for the teacher training. Having been a dancer before in my life with ballet and a degree in modern dance from the University of Colorado, I was able to catch on quickly and found that I was a natural teacher. I learned technique, problem solving and ways to trouble shoot for students who may have problems picking up the moves. I was in LOVE not only with hooping but with teaching hoop dance.

Mindy: What are the benefits of hooping?

Kristina: There are numerous benefits, including:

Body:

fun, creative, personal way of becoming physically fit

burns 400 to 600 calories per hour

strengthening of core muscles

toning of the arms and legs

freeing up of hips and spine and increased flexibility

increased hand-eye coordination and dexterity

Mind:

soothes the mind inducing joy and calm feelings

centers the mind and increases focus

mind-body connection is executed with a feeling of flow through movement

Spirit:

with practice one may find an expansive place of peace and connection to the present moment

reconnects us with the greater play of life

in Hoopdance, fun is a given and transcend-dance is a possibility where it can take us back the ancient connection between spirit and dance

Mindy: Why do you love to teach hoop dance?

Kristina: I love teaching hoop dance as I can see that in every class I make a difference in my students’ lives. There are so many metaphors for life in teaching hoop dance, and I hope that the metaphors I teach in class can be taken out of the hoop and into life. I believe that it does create a positive spin, so to speak, on my and my students’ life, germinating greater creativity, self confidence and community. I can see first hand, and I have had feed back from my students, that my classes improve lives not only in a physical way, but in a mental and spiritual way. My mantra is to keep movement in peoples’ lives no matter what age. In a recent intermediate hoop dance class I had a range of students from 6 to 66 years of age. In this class I realized that every person was meeting their own personal edge and at the same time feeling deep happiness and bliss.

All ages can hoop!

Mindy: Why would my readers want to give it a try?

Kristina: Well, who would not like to try something that will make them giggle and laugh, while keeping physically fit? If you like the form of exercise you’re doing, you are more likely to stick with it. I think it is safe to say that hoop dance holds the possibility of finding bliss, inner peace, physical fitness, mind/body connection and increased spiritual awareness all within the hoop. Over and over again I have seen it permeate outside of the hoop and into the personal world, making life better, richer and more colorful. I call this Soul Play. When we allow our soul to play, we can transform and transcend with grace and then allow ourselves to flow with life.

This is the second part of my four-part series on exercise: Let’s Move. Be sure to read the first part if you missed it. I’ve been doing T-Tapp for the past year and not only have I lost inches, but it has also helped me manage chronic pain in my lower back. A big thanks to Kayla Howard for writing the post below!

When did someone highjack my mirror?

I’m not sure when it happened, but someone high-jacked my mirror. The person I see reflected back at me, well….just isn’t me.

Why does she look so tired? When did she grow in size? Where has her sparkle gone?

Have you ever had those thoughts? 6 years ago that’s what I was thinking. Although it’s painful to admit you need to change something about the way you eat and/or exercise, it can be the breaking point that propels you to progression.

When we start a journey of transformation, the question rises, “How?”

People are trained to let their first thought go to diet when they want to reshape their body and lose weight. For some reason our culture has trained us that it’s all about eating less. That’s not 100% accurate.

Most of you already eat healthy. Some of you already eat really, really healthy. But your body still won’t budge the pudge simply because you need to move it!

I was an exercise hater myself. I did not want to “move it, move it.” I wanted to be skinny without diet OR exercise. Unfortunately, that didn’t work well for me. Since I already ate healthy, I chose to add fitness to my life instead of counting calories.

Mindy asked me to share about T-Tapp with you—that’s one of our favorite ways to move our body! Are you ready?

What is T-Tapp and why is it so great?

T-Tapp is a sequence of movements designed by fitness expert, Teresa Tapp. The goal is to put the body in proper alignment to optimize bodily functions. Getting your body in correct alignment enhances your body’s ability to burn fat, move lymph, and sculpt muscles!

T-Tapp is done without fancy equipment—just you, your tennis shoes and your DVD player.

T-Tapp comprehensively works the full length of the muscles from origin to insertion to produce long, lean muscles with beautiful “cuts”.

The principles you learn from T-Tapp can be applied to any exercise routine to enhance the results.

T-Tapp is more than just burning calories/fat – it literally resets and rebuilds your primary body functions (i.e.: lymphatic system, endocrine system, metabolic rate and elimination systems, among others).*

T-Tapp boosts thinking and brain power by crossing the mid-line of the body.

T-Tapp movements and sequences are very rehabilitative, especially for the lower back and knees. They look so simple – but they provide a workout like no other. *

You’ll never work just one muscle group with T-Tapp. This workout is designed to fatigue muscle groups layer by layer, working 5-7 muscles groups at a time!

So what did T-Tapp do for me? Without changing my diet, purchasing an expensive home gym or compromising time with my children, I reached my goal in 5 months time. Not only did I reach my goal but I have maintained that goal for 6 years, predominately spending only 15 minutes 3-5 times per week! And furthermore, T-Tapp helps the fit get fitter! Check out my 30 day results after T-Tapping for 3 years. I bet you can workout for 15 minutes too!
