Virgin Coconut Oil Review

When Tropical Traditions offered me the opportunity to test and review their Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil, I was really excited to give it a try.  I’ve used expeller-pressed coconut oil for years, for both cooking and personal care, but I have never given virgin coconut oil a try before.

I had always heard that virgin coconut oil has more of an actual coconut taste.  While I don’t mind the taste of coconut at all, I don’t always want everything to taste like it! But sometimes, it would be nice to add that flavor to certain dishes.

The Test
First, I tried adding some melted virgin coconut oil to my smoothie for breakfast.  I also included some coconut milk, egg yolks, berries, a frozen banana, vanilla, and cinnamon.  So yummy!  I loved the coconut taste and the extra fat helped me feel very satisfied until lunchtime.

Chicken Curry

The Tropical Traditions website has some great recipes posted and I decided to browse through those to find a dinner recipe which included virgin coconut oil.  I ended up making this Chicken Curry recipe which both my hubby and I really enjoyed.  The taste of coconut was very subtle in this dish, and paired really well with the curry.

The Verdict
So what’s my verdict?  I will definitely keep using the Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil.  It’s perfect for those times when you do want to impart a slight coconut taste to your dishes.  I will keep using my expeller-pressed oil, too.  And honestly, that will probably get more use than the virgin coconut oil.  But I’m really glad I got to try it and when this jar runs out, I’m sure I’ll be wanting to order some more!

I’m glad it was so successful! 😉 You’ll have to come over for dinner sometime and I’ll make the chicken curry!

That’s funny that you’ve never had virgin coconut oil before! That was one of the first things that I bought when I started getting into real food.

In case you’re looking for some other ideas, I find that virgin coconut oil is great in most baking. I usually just substitute it for whatever oil/fat the recipe calls for. We also love it in our chocolates recipe.
